What is Diarrhea?

Diarrhea is a common condition that affects people of all ages. It is characterized by loose, watery stools that occur more often than usual. Symptoms of Diarrhea

Causes of Diarrhea

·        Bacterial infections: Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli (E. coli) are common causes of diarrhea in adults.

·        Parasitic infections: Giardia and Cryptosporidium are common causes of diarrhea in travelers.

·        Food poisoning: Food poisoning can be caused by variety of bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

·        Medications: Some medications, such as anti biotic, can cause diarrhea as a side effect.

·        Underlying medical conditions: Diarrhea can be a symptom of underlying medical conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease(IBD), celiac disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Treatment for Diarrhea

 In most cases, diarrhea is not serious and goes away on its own within a few days. However, there are a number of things you can do to help relieve the symptoms and prevent dehydration:

·        Drink plenty of fluids: This will help to replace the fluids that are lost through diarrhea. Water, sports drinks, and clear broth are all good choices.

·        Eat bland foods: Bland foods are easier to digest and can help to reduce diarrhea. Some good choices include toast, crackers, rice, and bananas.

·        Avoid caffeine and alcohol: Caffeine and alcohol can irritate the stomach and make diarrhea worse.

·        Over-the-counter medications: There are a number of over-the-counter medications that can help to relieve the symptoms of diarrhea. These medications work by slowing down the movement of food through the intestines.

·        Antibiotics: If your diarrhea is caused by a bacterial infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics.

Preventing Diarrhea

There are a number of things you can do to help prevent diarrhea:

·        Wash your hands frequently: This is especially important after using the toilet, changing diapers, and before eating.

·        Cook food thoroughly: This will kill any harmful bacteria that may be present in the food.

·        Get vaccinated: There are vaccines available for some ofthe viruses that cause diarrhea, such as rotavirus and norovirus.
