Indore, known to be the cleanest city in India has recently witnessed a diarrhoeal breakout. Sewage or contaminated water entering the drinking system in the Bhagirathpura area has led to a serious health crisis where people are having typhoid-like symptoms and has caused a surge in hospital admissions.

Health authorities have screened almost 9000 people in that area and have confirmed more than 140 hospital admissions and 6 deaths so far. Water distribution in affected zones has been temporarily halted and health teams have been deployed to the regions. Specialist teams from national research institutes are now assisting the health department in containment efforts.

Due to the cross contamination, the drinking water gets polluted and houses disease-causing microorganisms, most often harmful bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella (that can cause Typhoid), and Shigella.

Let us have a closer look at the serious health impacts such water contamination can cause, and the steps individuals and communities can take to prevent it.

Common Symptoms:

Usually symptoms can emerge within hours to a few days after exposure. The most common ones are:

  • Diarrhoea: Frequent watery stools.
  • Nausea and Vomiting.
  • Abdominal Pain.
  • Bloating.
  • Fever.
  • Weakness.
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Dehydration.

Prevention and Management at Home:

Mild cases can be managed at home with timely and careful support.

  • Do not eat or drink anything brought from outside.
  • Hydration: Diarrhoea causes fluid and electrolytes loss from the body, so keep yourself hydrated with clean boiled or filtered water. Drink ORS if required. Diluted buttermilk with a pinch of salt and coconut water are also good options.
  • Diet: Keep the diet plain and simple. Avoid spicy and fried food. Include probiotics like curd which is soothing to the tummy and gives healthy bacteria. Khichdi with curd is a very good option. Avoid eating raw vegetables and fruits.
  • Hygiene Rules: Wash your hands with soap after using the toilet and before having meals. Avoid using tap water for cooking or drinking purposes. Boil water at least for one minute before drinking.
  • Practice proper waste disposal and clean surroundings help reduce the risk of cross contamination.
  • Good Rest: Due to the fluid depletion, you may feel weak and exhausted. Taking proper rest will help to overcome the weakness.
  • If the symptoms still persist or progress, seek immediate medical help.
  • Do not take any antibiotic or anti diarrheal medication without a doctor’s advice.

Conclusion:

This recent diarrhoea outbreak is an example of how unclean drinking water can seriously affect people’s health and spread quickly in the community. Timely medical care and prompt action from the health authorities play a significant role in containing the infection. While mild cases can be managed at home, it is crucial to visit a doctor if the symptoms are progressing. Using clean water, following good hygiene, and informing authorities about unclean water can help prevent such outbreaks.
