Introduction

Procedure of Vaman
1. Purva Karma (Pre-Procedure)
Snehana (Oleation): Internal and external application of medicated ghee or oil to loosen toxins.Swedana (Sudation): Fomentation to liquefy and mobilize Kapha dosha.Diet is adjusted to increase Kapha before the procedure (milk, curd, rice, sweets).
2. Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)
On the day of Vaman, patient is given Kapha-aggravating food and herbs.Specific emetic medicines (like Madanaphala, Yashtimadhu, Vacha, Saindhava) are administered with milk or decoctions.The patient vomits repeatedly under physician’s supervision until bile (Pitta) appears in vomitus, indicating completion.
3. Paschat Karma (Post-Procedure)
Patient is given Samsarjana Krama (a special diet regimen starting from light gruels to normal diet).Rest, avoidance of cold exposure, heavy exercise, and mental stress is advised.Rejuvenating medicines and Rasayanas may be prescribed to restore strength.
