Anagen Phase:

The anagen phase, or the growth phase, is the active period when hair follicles produce new hair. This phase typically lasts between two to seven years, but the duration varies from person to person. During anagen, the cells in the hair follicles divide rapidly, forming a long, healthy hair shaft. Around 85% to 90% of the hair on our scalp is in the anagen phase at any given time.

Catagen Phase:

Following the anagen phase, the hair follicles transition into the catagen phase, which is a short transitional period. This phase lasts for about two to three weeks. During catagen, the hair follicles shrink, and the blood supply to the hair is cut off. As a result, hair growth stops, and the outer sheath of the hair follicle attaches to the hair shaft. Only about 1% to 3% of hair is in the catagen phase at any given time.

Telogen Phase:

After the catagen phase, the hair follicles enter the telogen phase, also known as the resting phase. This phase lasts for about two to four months. During telogen, the hair follicles are at rest, and the hair is fully formed but not actively growing. Approximately 10% to 15% of hair is in the telogen phase. It is normal to shed around 50 to 100 telogen hairs per day, as new hairs prepare to grow in their place.

After the telogen phase, the hair growth cycle restarts, and the anagen phase begins again. The length of each phase and the overall hair growth cycle can be influenced by various factors such as genetics, age, hormonal changes, and health conditions.

Maintaining healthy hair growth involves providing proper care and addressing any underlying issues that may affect the hair follicles. This includes practicing a balanced diet, managing stress levels, avoiding excessive heat or chemical treatments, and keeping the scalp clean and well-nourished.
