The ear has natural self-cleaning mechanisms. Ear wax (cerumen) slowly moves outward with normal skin migration and jaw movement from talking or chewing. In most people, routine cleaning inside the ear canal is unnecessary.
Using cotton ear buds inside the ear is generally not advised. Instead of removing wax, they often push it deeper, leading to wax blockage, irritation, infection, reduced hearing, ringing in the ears, or even ear drum injury.
Ear buds may be used cautiously only for cleaning the outer ear or applying medication when advised by a doctor.
People with excessive wax buildup, hearing aids, narrow ear canals, or frequent ear infections may occasionally require professional cleaning by an ENT specialist.
Safer options for troublesome wax include wax-softening drops or ENT-guided removal.
