• Introduction -

Constipation is one of the most common digestive complaints seen in both urban and rural settings. It can significantly affect an individual’s quality of life, leading to discomfort, bloating, and a sense of incomplete evacuation. One of the most natural and effective remedies for this condition lies in a component of our everyday meals: dietary fibre.

  • What is Dietary Fibre?

Dietary fibre refers to the parts of plant-based foods that the body cannot digest. Unlike carbohydrates and fats, fibre passes through the digestive system relatively intact.

  •   It is broadly classified into two types:-

Soluble Fibre: Dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance (found in oats, fruits, legumes).

Insoluble Fibre: Adds bulk to stool and helps it pass more quickly through the intestines (found in whole grains, vegetables, wheat bran).

  • How Fibre Helps Relieve Constipation-  increases Stool Bulk insoluble fibre absorbs water and adds bulk to stool, which stimulates the colon and promotes easier bowel movement. Softens Stool soluble fibre helps retain water in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass. Supports Gut Health fiber acts as a prebiotic, feeding the good bacteria in your intestines and maintaining a healthy gut environment. Regular regular intake of fibre ensures consistent bowel movements and prevents the recurrence of constipation.
  • Sources of Dietary Fiber for patients experiencing constipation - a fibre-rich diet is a natural and holistic approach. Here are some excellent sources:Whole Grains: Brown rice, oats, whole wheat, daliya (broken wheat)Fruits: Guava, papaya, apple (with skin), banana, Orange vegetables: Spinach, carrots, beans, bottle gourd (lauki)Legumes: Chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans (rajma)Seeds and Nuts: Flaxseeds, chia seeds, Almonds recommended Daily Intake adults are generally advised to consume 25 to 35 grams of fibre per day.

However, it’s important to increase fibre intake gradually and accompany it with adequate water consumption to prevent gas or bloating.

  • Ayurvedic Perspective from an Ayurvedic standpoint -

constipation is often linked with an imbalance in the Vata dosha. Fibre-rich foods help regulate Vata and support Apana Vata, which governs elimination. Including Triphala churna or Isabgol (Psyllium husk) under professional supervision can be especially effective.

  • Tips for Patients-

begin the day with warm water and soaked raisins or figs.Avoid excessive intake of dry, fried, or spicy foods.Practice regular exercise and yoga, such as Pawanmuktasana and Vajrasana.Include ghee in the diet to lubricate the intestines.ConclusionConstipation, while common, should not be ignored. Integrating dietary fibre into one’s daily meals is a safe, effective, and natural way to maintain digestive health. As always, individual dietary plans should be personalized, especially for patients with chronic conditions. For professional guidance and holistic treatment
