The Importance of Third Trimester Scans: A Guide for Expecting Parents

The third trimester is a crucial phase of pregnancy, and regular check-ups become even more important to ensure the well-being of both mother and baby. One essential part of these check-ups is the third-trimester ultrasound scan. Gynecologists strongly advise expectant mothers not to miss these scans, as they provide invaluable information about fetal health, development, and birth planning. Here’s an overview of why these scans are so important.

1. Growth and Development Monitoring

The primary goal of third-trimester scans is to check the baby’s growth and development. These scans help:

  • Measure fetal size and weight to ensure the baby is growing at a healthy rate.
  • Assess the baby's position, which is critical for birth planning (breech or head-first).Detect any potential growth restrictions, ensuring early interventions if needed.

2. Placental Position and Function

The placenta’s health and location can significantly impact delivery. Through a third-trimester scan, doctors can check for placenta previa also.

3. Amniotic Fluid Levels

  • To Measure the amniotic fluid index (AFI), detecting any abnormalities.
  • Help diagnose polyhydramnios (excess amniotic fluid) or oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid), both of which may require special care or adjustments in the birth plan.

4. Fetal Well-being and Biophysical Profile

Some third-trimester scans include a biophysical profile (BPP), which checks five essential indicators of fetal well-being:

  • Fetal movements, Fetal tone – Measures muscle tone and movement.
  • Amniotic fluid level – As discussed, this should be within normal ranges.
  • Non-stress test (NST) – Monitors fetal heart rate response to movement.

5. Detection of Late Pregnancy Complications

Help in identifying complications such as:

  • Preeclampsia, Umbilical cord issues, such as cord prolapse or restricted blood flow, which may need urgent care.
  • Signs of premature labor or placental issues, ensuring timely intervention if necessary.

6. Type of Delivery or Birthing:

Finally, these scans help in planning the safest delivery method based on fetal health, size, and position. For instance:

A large baby may indicate the need for a cesarean delivery.

Breech positioning or other complexities can allow for adjustments to the birth plan.
