Take Due Precautions in Third Trimester: Never Do These Mistakes-Reputed Gynaecologist Dr Uma Mishra explains:

The third trimester is often considered the most crucial part of pregnancy. This period, which spans from week 28 to delivery, is vital for several reasons: ·

  • Foetal Development: During the third trimester, the baby’s brain and other vital organs such as the lungs, eyes, heart, immune system, intestinal system, and kidneys undergo significant development. The baby also gains weight rapidly, which is essential for survival outside the womb
  • Preparation for Birth: The baby starts to position itself for birth, usually moving into a head-down position. The mother’s body also prepares for labor and delivery, with changes such as the cervix beginning to dilate and efface
  • Monitoring and Care: Increased prenatal visits are crucial during this time to monitor both the mother’s and baby’s health. This includes checking the baby’s position, growth, and heart rate, as well as the mother’s blood pressure and weight

ACOG Guidelines for the Third Trimester

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists(ACOG) provides several guidelines for the third trimester to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and the baby:·

  • Frequent Prenatal Visits: ACOG recommends more frequent prenatal visits during the third trimester. Typically, these visits occur every two weeks until week 36, and then weekly until delivery
  • Monitoring Fetal Health: Regular checks on the baby’s growth, position, and heart rate are essential. This may include ultrasounds and non-stress tests, especially if the pregnancy is high-risk
  • Vaccinations: ACOG advises on necessary vaccinations during pregnancy, such as the Tdap vaccine to protect against whooping cough
  • Screening for Group B Strep: Around 36 weeks, a test for Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is recommended to prevent potential infections in the newborn

These guidelines help ensure that any complications are detected early and managed effectively, contributing to a safer delivery and a healthy baby. There are various other factors, which are patient centric and are discussed during your Antenatal Care visit to Gynecologist.
