What are Stretch marks???

Stretch marks are long, narrow, streaks, or lines that develop on the skin. They occur when the skin is suddenly stretched. 

Although the skin is usually elastic when it is overstretched, but there is disruption in the normal production of collagen.

This type of scarring happens when the skin cannot resume normal form after a period of intense growth, commonly seen during pregnancy (over 50 percent of women experienced during pregnancy), weight loss, or puberty.

Anyone can develop stretch marks. It is mostly seen in women than men. They are not physically dangerous, but can cause problems with self-image and anxiety. 

Stretch marks are scars or disfiguring lesions. They can be classified into different types based on their formation, appearance, and associated conditions.

The main types of stretch marks are:

Striae atrophicans, striae gravidarum, striae caerulea, striae nigrae, striae rubrae, striae albae.

The most common areas affected include:

-flank

-buttocks

-thighs

Striae Rubrae - It is an early stage mark that appears pink or red. They indicate recent skin stretching and are characterized by increased vascularity and inflammation. These marks can be sensitive to touch and may cause itching or discomfort. It is important to address such marks promptly to minimize their appearance.

Striae Albae- These are mature or old marks that have faded and turned white or silver. These marks indicate that the initial inflammation has subsided and the skin has undergone some healing.

Striae Gravidarum - These are commonly known as pregnancy marks, it develops as a result of rapid expansion of the abdominal area during pregnancy. They are seen on the abdomen, breasts, hips, and thighs. This mostly happens due to hormonal changes, increased cortisone levels, stretching of skin. Skincare during pregnancy can help reduce their severity.

Striae Nigrae - This is a specialized type of mark that is observed in individuals with darker skin type complexion. They are commonly seen on the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, thighs. They appear as dark grey or black lines.

Striae Caerulea - Similar to nigrae, these are also seen in darker skin type complexion. These look like dark blue or purplish color which could indicate an active inflammatory response.

Striae Atrophicans - These are characterized by thinned and depressed skin in areas where marks have formed. They may be seen in individuals with certain medical condition, such as Cushing's syndrome, or as a side effects of prolonged use of corticosteroids.

How to Prevent??

Stretch marks cannot always be prevented. Although, a few lifestyle modifications could help to reduce the risk:
