Bones are always susceptible to osteoporosis (bone thinning) if care is not taken of them, especially the wrist, hip, and spine bones. Exercise serves as a form of medication for patients with bone-related ailments since it makes your bones stronger over time. Bones are useful in lifting and carrying items, groceries, gardening, and other household chores.

Young people who are indifferent about bone loss should be aware that men and women can develop weak bones at any age, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. 

Why exercise?

Both muscles and bones are living tissues. Young men and women who frequently exercise tend to have stronger and denser bones than those who do not. The third decade of life is when bone mass rises for the majority of people. 

After that, we may start to lose bone mass and density. Regular exercise can help men and women older than 20 years old prevent bone loss. By keeping our muscles strong, coordinated, and balanced through exercise, we can fend off bone-related problems as well as other illnesses. The elderly and those with osteoporosis should pay particular attention to this.

Exercises for healthy bones 

Most orthopedics and rheumatologists, while focusing on bone health, suggest that engaging in activities like running and jumping can effectively enhance bone health. These exercises generate forces on the bones and stimulate them to undergo reconstruction, ultimately leading to increased bone density.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends the following exercises as optimal for building and preserving bone density:

1) Weight-bearing exercises, such as walking, require you to exert effort against gravity while maintaining an upright posture.


2) Muscle-strengthening exercises, such as weightlifting, involve working against gravity while standing, sitting, or lying down.

There are certain activities that are not high-impact but are focused on posture and balance, which may provide relief from bone-related issues. While these exercises do not directly build or maintain bone density, they can enhance muscle strength and reduce the risk of falls and fractures.

In situations where high-impact weight-bearing exercises are deemed unsafe by a medical professional, low-impact weight-bearing exercises may be recommended. These exercises are less likely to cause fractures while still promoting the building and maintenance of bone density. 

Some examples include using elliptical training machines, engaging in low-impact aerobics, using stair-step machines, and walking either outdoors or on a treadmill.

If you are new to exercise or have been inactive for a while, it is advisable to gradually increase your duration of weight-bearing exercises to 30 minutes per day on most days of the week.
