What is PPI?

PPIs are Proton pump inhibitors eg. PANTOPRAZOLE, OMEPRAZOLE, RABEPRAZOLE etc.

Proton pumps are present in the stomach and their function is to release acid (HCl) and help in the process of digestion. In cases of overfunctioning of these pumps we face issues of indigestion and acidity.

These pumps are inhibited by PPIs and result in reduction in acid production and used in the treatment of various diseases.

PPI Abuse

Nowadays the most commonly used medicine by the patients is PPI whether prescribed or not people take these medicines over the counter and take these on a regular basis for months and years claiming a sense of relief after having them. I have even seen patients arguing on not prescribing any antacid tablet. They keep these PPIs at home and whenever they don't feel ok they take one.

Working in a Government Hospital for 6 years now, I have realised the need to let people know about the side effects of their most loved medicine PPI, aka Pan40.

As a Doctor I never fail to educate my patients on the benefits as well as the side effects of medicines.

What are the side effects of long term use of PPIs?

1. SIBO-Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

2. Kidney diseases

3. Magnesium deficiency

4. Prone to fractures

DONOT take unnecessary medication.

DONOT self- medicate.

Take medicines only after proper consultation.
