Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) — or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — are generally acquired by sexual contact. The bacteria, viruses or parasites that cause sexually transmitted diseases may pass from person to person in blood, semen, or vaginal and other bodily fluids.

There are dozens of STDs. Some STDs, such as  genital herpes, human papillomavirus infection, HIV/AIDS, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, are spread mainly by sexual contact. Other diseases, including Zika and Ebola, can be spread sexually but are more often spread through ways other than sex.

As STDs can have a serious negative impact on one’s life, they are an important global health priority. Some effective prevention and treatment approaches are available to control the spread of STDs.
