What is Scoliosis Pain?
In scoliosis, the spine curves sideways. Nerves get irritated or stretched from this curvature of the spine. It also causes joints to be strained and inflamed. Scoliosis leads to muscle tightness or fatigue, which also affects your posture. Scoliosis causes pressure on your spinal discs, facet joints, and muscles that leads to scoliosis pain.
Symptoms:
- A visible curve in your back, Uneven shoulders, One scapula appears more prominent than the other, Uneven waist, One hip higher than the other, An elongated rib cage on one side, When bending forward, there is a prominence on one side of the back, In addition, low back pain/back stiffness/pain and numbness in your leg, Also, fatigue due to muscle strain.
Complications associated with Scoliosis pain:
- Breathing problems, Back problems,
Aims of physiotherapy are:
- Pain relief, Regain coordination, Maintaining equilibrium, Ergonomical corrections, Increase muscular endurance/strength, Neuromotor control of the spine, Increase range of motion, and Increase respiratory capacity.
Physiotherapy Treatments of Scoliosis Pain:
- Heat therapy:
- Heat increases local circulation and relaxes tight muscles.
- Ice:
- Ice helps to decrease pain and inflammation.
- Manual therapy such as:
- Soft tissue mobilization/massage, Manipulation, Kinesio taping.
- Chiropractic treatment:
- Chiropractic treatment help decrease pain and increase flexibility.
- Core Strengthening exercises:
- Stretching:
- Spine forward stretching: With straight backs and stretched legs, the patient sits on the floor. His trunk must be brought forward. Goal: Mobilizing the vertebral spine and Stretching the posterior muscle.
- Upper rolling: The patient lies supine with the arms beside the body. The patient has to raise both legs till the toes touch the floor. Then, unroll the spine slowly (vertebra by vertebra) Goal: stretching the posterior chain, mobilizing the spine, and strengthening the abdomen.
- Child position: The patient sits in a four support position and has to stretch the spine, and arms and push the hands against the floor. Then lower the spine. Goal: Stretching of thoracic, lumbar, and gluteal regions and vertebral spine mobilization.
- Forward leg pull: The patient is seated in a four-point support position. Keeping the spine aligned, raise the right arm and leg. Then the same exercise but change arm and leg.
- Back muscle strengthening exercise:
- Arm and leg raises, Cat and camel, Superman exercises,
- Swiss ball exercises:
- Breathing exercises:
- Electrotherapy such as:
- Combo therapy (US + TENS), TR therapy, SIS.
- Braces:
- The brace prevents the curve from getting worse.
