It is evident that most pregnant ladies gain weight throughout their pregnancy. However, knowing how much weight gain is healthy and how much should be expected at different intervals is always helpful in judging whether the mother is gaining a healthy weight or not.

As per the Indian standards, the following is the average pattern of weight gain in pregnant women:

Most women, with normal weight prior to pregnancy, gain about 12 to 16 kilograms during their pregnancy. The numbers differ if one is underweight or overweight at the start of the pregnancy.

Your body is developing extra body tissues and your baby is growing so definitely you need extra nutrition but don’t ‘eat for two’ as they suggest. Eat just as much as required. Overweight pregnancy can also lead to problems later in the third trimester.

The weight also differs as per BMI. For example, if your body mass index is 23 (18.5 to 24.9 is normal), you should gain about 11.5 to 16 kilograms of weight. You gain about 1.5 to 2 kilograms in the first three months and then 1.5 to 2 kilograms each month till delivery.

Your weight indicates your health. Therefore, it is important to go for regular checkups at your Gynaecologist to ensure that everything’s going right.
