Ankylosing Spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects parts of the spine, bones, muscles and ligaments. This is classified as a rare disease although it is probable that many people affected by it are not diagnosed for long periods of time. During this period, precious time is lost, causing reduction in the mobility of the spine and other joints. The nomenclature has now changed to axial spondyloarthritis. With the advent of newer imaging technologies such as MRI techniques, we often diagnose patients early on, so that they don’t develop the characteristic spine deformities. Awareness about this condition is extremely important. Not only among the common people but also in the medical fraternity. 

Today is world Ankylosing Spondylitis day, and a great opportunity to create some awareness. Identified by a chronic back pain - this is a condition that affects the young and able and prevents them from achieving their full potential. Early diagnosis and newer treatment options can ensure a drastically improved quality of life. It is very important to seek medical attention early in the course of the disease.
