Teeth Whitening Alternatives in Delhi: What Are Your Options?
By Dr. Rajat Sachdeva, MDS, MBA

Teeth whitening is one of the most commonly requested cosmetic dental treatments. It can improve stains caused by tea, coffee, tobacco, coloured foods and natural ageing.
However, whitening does not work equally well for every patient.
Some stains are present deep inside the enamel or dentine. In such cases, repeated whitening sessions may not provide the expected result. The first step is to identify the type and cause of discoloration before choosing a treatment.
When May Teeth Whitening Not Be Effective?
Professional teeth whitening is mainly effective for external or surface-level stains. It may be less effective in cases involving:
Dental fluorosis
Tetracycline-related staining
Trauma to a tooth
Root canal-treated or non-vital teeth
Developmental enamel defects
Deep brown, grey or internal discoloration
Existing crowns, veneers or fillings
Dental restorations do not change colour with whitening. This is important when planning the final shade of the smile.
Alternatives to Teeth Whitening
1. Enamel Microabrasion
Microabrasion is a conservative procedure used for selected superficial white or brown enamel stains.A very thin surface layer of enamel is carefully treated to improve the appearance of the tooth. It may be useful in mild fluorosis or surface enamel defects.
2. Composite Bonding
Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin material to cover mild discoloration, small gaps, chips or irregularities. It usually requires minimal tooth preparation and can often be completed in a single appointment. It is a conservative option, although periodic polishing and maintenance may be required.
3. Dental Veneers
Veneers are thin shells placed over the front surface of the teeth. They may be considered for deep stains, fluorosis, uneven tooth shape, minor gaps, worn teeth or smile-design concerns. Veneers are customized according to the patient’s facial features, tooth proportions and desired shade. The treatment should be planned carefully to preserve maximum natural enamel.
4. Internal Bleaching
When a single tooth becomes dark after trauma or root canal treatment, internal bleaching may be considered.Unlike regular whitening, the bleaching material is placed inside the tooth. The root canal treatment and surrounding tissues must be examined before planning this procedure.
5. Dental Crowns
Crowns cover the complete visible portion of a tooth. They are generally considered when discoloration is associated with significant structural damage, large fillings, cracks, fractures or a weakened root canal-treated tooth.Crowns require more tooth preparation than veneers or bonding, so they should be recommended only when the tooth also needs structural protection.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
The ideal treatment depends on:
The cause and depth of the stain
The condition of the enamel
Whether one tooth or multiple teeth are involved
The health of the gums
Existing fillings, crowns or veneers
Tooth alignment and bite
The amount of healthy tooth structure available
The patient’s cosmetic expectationsIn some patients, a combination of cleaning, whitening, microabrasion and bonding may provide the desired result. Others may benefit from veneers or crowns.
Final Advice
Not every dark or stained tooth needs a veneer or crown, and not every patient will benefit from whitening.
The best cosmetic dental treatment is the one that improves the smile while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.
A proper clinical examination, dental photographs, shade assessment and, when required, X-rays can help determine the most suitable option.
