When a Small Tooth Problem Causes Big Pain
A patient visited Summirow Dental Clinic with the complaint of pain in the upper right back tooth region. Pain in the wisdom tooth area can make eating and chewing uncomfortable and sometimes even disturb daily activities.
After listening to the patient’s concern, a detailed clinical examination was performed. To understand the exact cause of the pain, we advised an OPG (Orthopantomogram), which is a panoramic dental X-ray used to evaluate all the teeth and surrounding bone.
Diagnosis - What Did the X-ray Show?
The OPG revealed mesial caries in tooth number 18, which is the upper right wisdom tooth.
The cavity was located on the mesial surface (the side facing the adjacent tooth). Wisdom teeth are located at the extreme back of the mouth, making them difficult to clean properly. Because of this, they are more prone to:
- Food accumulation
- Bacterial growth
- Tooth decay (caries)
- Gum inflammation
Considering the extent of decay and the position of the tooth, the best treatment option was extraction of the wisdom tooth.
Treatment Done - Extraction of Tooth 18
After explaining the diagnosis and treatment plan to the patient, we proceeded with the extraction of tooth number 18.
Procedure Steps:-
- Local anesthesia was given to numb the area
- The tooth was gently loosened using dental instruments
- The decayed wisdom tooth was carefully removed
- The socket was cleaned thoroughly
- Post-extraction instructions were provided to the patient
The procedure was smooth, safe, and comfortable for the patient.
Patient Outcome
After the extraction, the patient experienced immediate relief from the pain that had been troubling them.
The patient was very happy and satisfied with the treatment, and the recovery process was explained along with necessary precautions.
Why Wisdom Tooth Problems Should Not Be Ignored
Ignoring pain in the wisdom tooth region can lead to several dental complications. Over time, untreated wisdom tooth problems may cause severe tooth decay, frequent food lodgement, gum infections, swelling, and even pus formation. In some cases, a partially erupted or improperly positioned wisdom tooth can also affect the adjacent molars, increasing the risk of cavities and damage to nearby teeth.
Early diagnosis through dental examination and X-rays helps identify potential problems, prevent further complications, and determine the most appropriate treatment to protect your oral health.
Signs That You May Need Wisdom Tooth Removal
Watch for these symptoms:
- Pain in the back tooth region
- Food frequently getting stuck
- Swelling around the wisdom tooth
- Difficulty chewing
- Bad taste or bad breath
If you notice any of these signs, it is best to consult a dentist for evaluation.
Conclusion
Wisdom teeth often create problems due to their position at the back of the mouth and difficulty in cleaning them properly. In this case, timely diagnosis with an OPG X-ray helped identify the problem early, and simple extraction resolved the patient’s pain completely.
The patient left the clinic pain-free, relieved, and satisfied with the treatment outcome.
