Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints, causing inflammation, pain, swelling, and stiffness. Unlike osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative joint disease, RA is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium, the lining of the membranes that surround the joints. This leads to inflammation that can eventually damage the joint and surrounding tissues.

Women are more commonly affected by RA than men, and the condition often starts between the ages of 30 and 60.

Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis aims to manage symptoms, slow down or stop the progression of the disease, and improve quality of life. Lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management, can also help improve the overall well-being of people living with rheumatoid arthritis.

Below are some quick tips which would show a significant improvement in the condition.

Diet:

  • It’s always important to eat a balanced, healthy diet to fight inflammation.  There is no one right diet for everyone with Rheumatoid Athritis (RA). However, as per the research, there are some Yes and No for diets.
  • In general, high fiber and plant based diet are quite effective in managing the RAFish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are full of omega-3 fatty acids that curb chemicals called cytokines, which causes inflammation. Studies show that omega-3s may ease joint pain and shorten the time you have stiffness in the morning.
  • Colorful fruits and veggies, whole grains like oatmeal, brown rice, and barley are often good and helpful choices in RA. People who eat whole grains have shown to have lower levels of C-reactive protein, a sign of inflammation.
  • Inculcating fresh turmeric in routine diet has shown good response in the rheumatoid patients specifically due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Exercises:

  • Low-impact aerobic exercises like light walking, riding a bike, and swimming are good choices for people with RA. Stationary bike or treadmill also are great help.
  • Stretching exercises are of great help for all age groups. Stretching exercises help keep your muscles strong.
  • Resistance bands or light weights that gently strengthen the muscles.
  • Yoga help boost your balance and flexibility. They may even ease your pain.
