What is Ageing ?
Ageing is the progressive physiological change that occurs in an individual which leads to senescence or a decline of the biological functions and the individual's ability to adapt to metabolic stress
Ageing begins the day we are born and proceeds at different rates in different individuals
Changes during skin Ageing
- Sagging and wrinkling of skin
- Collagen production
- Thinning of skin
- Dryness of skin
- Loss of elasticity of skin
Objective signs of Skin
- Greater visibility of bony landmarks, lines and wrinkles
- Prominence of transverse forehead lines
- Nasolabial folds becomes more prominent
- Hollowing of mid-face
- Development of pre-jowl depression
Types of Ageing
Intrinsic ageing
- Also called chronologic ageing
- This is the inevitable natural ageing process that occurs in all people
- Although begins in the early 20's, signs are not visible for many decades
Extrinsic ageing
- These are the outside factors that contribute to skin ageing like smoking , photo-ageing , chronic diseased state , malnutrition
Treatment for Ageing
- Retinol - Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A that stimulates the production of collagen by inhibiting collagen breakdown enzyme namely COLLAGENASE
Retinol increases epidermal and granular cell layer thickness by increasing the cell turnover
ONE SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT A DERMATOLOGIST BEFORE INTRODUCING RETINOL OR IT'S DERIVATIVE IN THEIR SKINCARE ROUTINE
2. Hyaluronic acid - It is a naturally occuring polysacchiride present in our body.
As we age , the HA content in our body decreases
HA is a hydrophillic compound that binds to H2O molecules, thus increasing the moisture content
3. Vitamin C- Vitamin C helps in neutralising the effect of oxididation on our skin , hence called an Anti-oxidant
Therefore having Vitamin C in your routine is a must!!!
Peptides , Ceramides, Squalane help in moisturising your skin , thereby reducing visible signs of ageing
DONT FORGET TO MOISTURISE , AND LAYER YOUR SKIN WITH SUNSCREEN !
