OPEN PORES

Open pores are, characterised by enlarged skin pores that can make the skin appear rough, aged and uneven. They often occur on the face, particularly around the nose, cheeks, and forehead, and can be associated with oily or combination skin types. Skin pores allow it to ‘breathe’ by releasing the sebum or natural oil onto the surface. However, large skin pores often appear in areas that have a higher density of sebaceous glands, specifically in the ‘T-zone’ of the face. They adversely affect the skin texture. Affects teenagers undergoing hormonal changes and adults with ageing skin or hormonal issues.

Causes- ·

  •  Excessive Sun Exposure- Sun damage may adversely affect the collagen and elastin fibres in the skin causing diminished strength and elasticity of the skin . Make the skin thicker and damage collagen which causes larger pores·
  •   Heredity Factor- Genetic predisposition and ethnicity
  • Hormonal Changes- Hormonal fluctuations stimulate the hyperactivity of sebaceous glands and trigger excessive sebum production, resulting in large open pores.
  • Clogged Pores-  When dirt, oil, and makeup accumulate in the pores they stretch and appear larger.
  • Chronic Acne- Pores in acne-prone skin clog and cause blackheads and whiteheads. Moreover, inflammatory acne weakens sebum glands and follicular openings and enlarges the pores.
  • Excessive Sebum Production- Excessive sebum secretion, especially in those with oily or combination skin, leads to the enlargement of hair follicle openings and the appearance of large open pores.
  • Increased Hair Follicle Volume- Thicker hair follicles have a bigger follicular opening that forms skin pores which dilate further to allow the flow of natural oil and appear enlarged.

Myth 1:  You Can Permanently Close Pores.

Truth: You can’t “close” or “shrink” pores permanently. Pores don’t have muscles to open or close. However, you can minimize their appearance with the right care and products.

Myth 2Ice Closes Your Pores.

Truth: Applying ice can temporarily tighten your skin and reduce redness or inflammation, but it doesn’t actually close your pores instantly.

Myth 3: Oily Skin Always Has Large Pores.

Truth: While oily skin can make pores more noticeable, even dry or normal skin can have enlarged pores due to aging, sun damage, or improper skincare.

Myth 4: Scrubbing Hard Will Clean Pores.

Truth: Over-scrubbing or harsh exfoliation can irritate the skin and make pores look even more prominent. Gentle, chemical exfoliation is a better approach.

Treatments -

  • Laser skin Resurfacing-   Rejuvenates the skin texture and improve complexion. The laser beams help to remove the damaged outer layers of the target area by stimulating new collagen production. This increased collagen tightens the skin, making it smooth and even-toned.

Ablative laser, which vapourises the skin and stimulates collagen production in the skin.

Non-ablative laser, which heats the underlying dermis and encourages collagen production                    without removing the top damaged layer of skin.

  • Chemical Peels- A chemical peel treatment is a skin rejuvenating procedure, which makes use of mild acids derived from natural sources of varying strengths to exfoliate the upper layers of the skin in a controlled manner, followed by regeneration of new healthier layers. It helps even out skin texture and improves its appearance. Helps to  reduce the excess accumulated pigment in the form of spots.
  • Micro-needling radiofrequency (MNRF) is a minimally invasive technique that combines the traditional micro-needling procedure effectively with radiofrequency energy to rejuvenate the appearance of your skin. The RF pulse carried through a fractional technique deep into the dermis induces skin tightening and reduces acne scars by stimulating the synthesis of both collagen and elastin.
  • Laser toning treatment- It can reduce melanin in the skin and is useful in treating pigmentary concerns. This procedure also boosts collagen production, improves skin elasticity and texture and is useful intreating acne scars, and enlarged pores. Reduces oil secretion and stimulates collagen to shrink pore size on the nose and cheeks.
  • Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment for open pores that employs a handheld device to exfoliate the skin’s surface using fine crystals or a wand with a diamond tip. This procedure removes dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and stimulates blood flow resulting in a smoother and more refined complexion.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmentation, redness, and enlarged pores. The light energy heats the skin stimulating collagen production and reducing pore size.
  • AquaFacial is a multi-step treatment that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant protection. A specialized device is used to remove impurities from the pores and infuse the skin with nourishing serums leaving it smooth and radiant.

Prevention of Open Pores

  • Always remove makeup before sleeping.
  • Cleanse twice a day.
  •   Avoid excessive exfoliation.
  •  Eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Avoid touching face frequently to reduce infection.
