Many parents think nebulization is required for every cough and cold. This is not true.
Nebulization is mainly helpful when there is narrowing of the airways causing:
- Wheezing
- Fast breathing
- Chest tightness
- Difficulty breathing
Conditions where nebulization may help:
- Wheezing-associated respiratory illness
- Asthma
- Bronchiolitis (selected cases)
- Allergic airway symptoms
Simple cold with only runny nose or mild cough usually does not need repeated nebulization.
Important points:
- Nebulization is not “oxygen” treatment
- Overuse without indication should be avoided
- Steam inhalation should be done carefully in children to avoid burns
Seek urgent medical care if child has:
- Rapid breathing
- Chest retractions
- Bluish lips
- Inability to feed or speak properly
