Understanding Levels of Autism: From Old Severity Scores to the DSM-5 Support Model

I often see parents are very much scared about the word level or severity fo autism. Traditional system has brainwashed the community to impact that level is permanent and severe is bad.

Every parent visit to hear that their child has low level or has mld autism. This has created market of scores... And showing different scores by different question answer tool ha become a business model over last 2 decades. It's time to give up this old scoring based leveling and understand dsm 5 based , independence based level or classification. What is more important is to understand that level or dependency can be improved with efforts.

Autism understanding has evolved significantly over the years. Earlier, autism was often described using terms like mild, moderate, and severe, or based on scores from diagnostic tools. Today, the DSM-5 uses a different approach — focusing on the level of support a person needs rather than labeling severity alone.

Understanding this shift helps parents, educators, and clinicians better appreciate the needs and potential of individuals on the spectrum.
