Laser hair reduction offers a long-term solution for reducing unwanted hair. The number of laser hair reduction sessions is determined by the hair growth cycle, body area treated, hair colour and thickness, and underlying hormonal factors.
Laser hair removal only works on follicles in the active growth phase (anagen). At any given moment, only 15-20% of follicles in a treated area are in Anagen – the rest are in the transitional (catagen) or resting (telogen) phase and will not respond to the laser. Multiple sessions spaced several weeks apart are required to catch each follicle during its anagen window.
Different body areas have different anagen cycle lengths and different percentages of active follicles. Areas with shorter growth cycles (underarms, bikini)complete a full course faster. Areas with longer cycles or denser follicle populations (legs, back, face) take more sessions. The spacing between sessions also changes by area – face sessions are spaced 4-6 weeks apart; body sessions are typically 6-8 weeks apart.
Diode laser targets Melanin – the pigment in hair. Coarser, darker hair has higher melanin concentration and absorbs laser energy more efficiently. These follicles respond faster and are typically eliminated in fewer sessions. Fine or lighter hair has lower melanin and requires more energy across more sessions to achieve the same reduction. Blonde, grey, or white hair does not contain enough melanin to respond to diode laser.
Underarms respond fastest because the hair follicle densityis relatively low and the area is easy to treat completely in each session. Facial hair takes the most sessions because the growth cycle is shorter (more active follicles cycling through at different times), and the hormonal influence particularly along the chin and jawline is more.
With waxing or epilating (which pulls hair from the root),some follicles may have been partially damaged over time and will respond quickly to laser. Others will be unaffected. With shaving (which doesn’t disturb the root),all follicles are at full strength.
Permanent reduction show 70–90% reduction in hair count after a full series, depending on the area and patient factors. The remaining 10–30% of hair is typically finer, lighter, and slower-growing than the original hair. No longer need to shave, wax, or manage the area regularly. But still see occasional fine hairs or sparse regrowth, particularly in hormonally influenced areas. Patients benefit from 1–2 maintenance sessions per year after completing their initial series. They are brief sessions that catch any follicles that have reactivated or any new growth that has appeared.
So mostly for patients, 6-8 sessions complete the treatment. For some, new hair growth continues after the course ends because hormonalactivity is stimulating new follicles.
Patients with PCOS, elevated androgens, thyroid disorders, or those on hormonal medications may experience continued stimulation of new follicle growth even after a successful initial course. New follicles are being activated by ongoing hormonal signalling. These patients often need maintenance sessions every 12-18 months after the initial course is complete.
