Keep the glory of your skin maintained this summer!!!

It’s the time of the year when hot chai becomes a little less flavored and nimbu soda becomes a go to option. Very soon anything synthetic will be a no-no and cotton will be your go to fabric. Fridge becomes loaded with fruits and juices and we crib every time our air conditioner breaks down even for a minute. Yes! you guessed it, we are talking about summers. Summer is a season for picnics, outings. But on the other side it comes with whole lot of skin related issues. The scorching heat wipes the skin off natural glow.                 Increase in temperature increases activity of sebum producing glands in skin making oily skin appear oilier and dry skin appear rough and patchy. Intensity of UV rays in sunlight increases causing tanning of skin due to more melanin pigment production. The heat can cause more pores to open which can get clogged with dirt and oil, trapping bacteria causing pimples and blemishes on face. Over exposure to UV rays in sunlight causes premature aging of skin with early appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The water content of skin cell decreases on prolonged exposure to heat. The heat causes excessive sweating and sometimes clogging of dust particles in sweat producing glands in skin causing itchy heat rashes and blisters. At a certain time in a day during summer sun rays are so harsh that the exposed skin can become red and get burnt. Also high temperature enhances activity of certain bacteria and viruses causing skin infections.

So, set up your skin care routine by adopting these healthy skin care habits from dermatologists. A little change in your daily skin care routine and little more efforts will make your skin flawless.

Summer skin care tips:-

Lighten up your skin care routine-In summer, I generally remind patients that just like their wardrobe their skin care products need to be little light weight.

Avoid using oily heavier cleansers and try using gentle foaming cleansers.

Adopt a dual purpose moisturizer-A combination of sunscreen and light moisturizer can work wonders on your skin. Minimum SPF [sun protection factor] recommended for sunscreen  is 30.

Do not stop moisturizing despite weather being hot you need to moisturize your skin. Moisturizers re-establish outer layer of skin protecting from harmful chemicals and pollutatnts.

Exfoliate your skin-Exfoliation is a method to keep face clean and free from dirt. Mild exfoliation twice a week is recommended.

Avoid products with rough pieces like shells, nuts, and microbeads and instead look for products with salts and sugars or enzymatic scrubs with fruit acids, such as papaya, pumpkin or pineapple. These will be more gentle on the skin, especially when it’s more frequently exposed to strong ultraviolet rays.

Be in shade-Be mindful to wear light weight cotton clothes, wide rimmed hats and sunglasses.

Be under an umbrella whenever you need to go out.

Sunscreens are must-Sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher is essential for effective protection from harmful UV rays of sunlight. Remember to re-apply after a couple of hours. It is recommended to apply it in morning and afternoon hours when intensity of sunlight increases.

Add antioxidants-Sunlight leads to production of certain toxic substances in skin cells called free radicles which damage collagen and elastin in skin thus causing fine lines and wrinkles. Antioxidants are substances that prevent production of these toxic free radicles. So it is advised to use vitamin C containing serum for application on skin and vitamin C containing substances in diet like amla, lemon, oranges.

Do not forget to hydrate-Hydration is always important for our skin, but even more so in the summer. Aim for eight glasses of water a day. Hydration can also help skin recover after a sunburn.

Cut down your tub time.Between workouts, beach days, many of us shower more than once a day during the summer. Keep showers short, around four to five minutes. "Over-showering, or showering in water that is too hot, can lead to over-drying your skin, leading to inflammation and even summertime eczema. Wear a non-comedogenic make-upHope these summer skin care tips help you keep your skin flawless and glowing!
