Many parents want their child's teeth straightened but worry about two years of metal braces through school photos, board exams and sports. Invisalign is often an option for teenagers now. Here are the questions parents most often ask.
What age can a child start Invisalign?
Usually once most of the permanent teeth have come in, typically between 11 and 14. If there is a jaw growth problem, a different appliance may be needed first. The American Association of Orthodontists advises a first orthodontic check by around age 7, so problems can be caught while the jaw is still growing.
Will a teenager wear them 22 hours a day?
This is the real question. Aligners only work when they are in the mouth. Invisalign's aligners for teens can include blue wear indicators that fade with use, so parents and the orthodontist can see whether they are being worn enough. If a child is unlikely to manage it, fixed braces may be the more reliable choice.
Are aligners better than braces for teenagers?
Neither is better for everyone. Aligners are removable, so brushing and flossing are easier, eating is unrestricted, and there are no wires to break before an exam or a match. Braces work full time without relying on the child and often suit certain complex bite problems better. An orthodontist can advise after examining the bite and X-rays.
What about sports, music and school?
Aligners can come out for a match or a wind instrument and go back in afterwards. Most teens speak normally within a day or two, and a sports mouthguard can still be worn for contact sports.
What does it cost and how long does it take?
In Delhi NCR, Invisalign usually costs between ₹1.5 and ₹3 lakh, and metal braces start from about ₹80,000. Treatment typically takes 12 to 24 months, depending on the case. The exact plan and cost should come after a 3D scan.
What should parents do next?
Book an orthodontic check, even if you are not sure your child needs treatment yet. Catching a problem early often makes treatment simpler.
