An outfit just isn’t finished until you find the perfect pair of shoes, and shopping for those shoes can be so much fun— as long as you know exactly what to look for when you do! You want the footwear to look elegant & trendy, at the same time it should support your foot well, provide stability and protect your feet from the environment.
Choosing the wrong type or size of shoe can be damaging to your feet, or worsen the existing foot problems.
So here are a few things you should take care of before you finally choose your footwear.
- Traditionally we buy footwear on single dimension i.e. length but our foot has three dimensions i.e. length, breadth and height. If you have a wide foot, buy footwear manufactured wide and do not compromise by buying a longer footwear to accommodate the width.
- Right & left feet may differ in length, width as much as full size hence measure both feet before buying shoes, try shoes on both and fit to the larger size
- If your feet seem “between” sizes it is better to select the bigger size. Adjustments can be made for a better fit with socks, insoles or different lacing pattern
- Make sure there is enough space (1 cm or 1 finger space) between the longest toe and the shoe wall when you are standing leaving enough room in the toe box region to wiggle your toes
- Measure your feet every year as Foot size changes with age
- Best time to measure & fit shoes is late afternoon or evening when your feet are at their largest volume
- Too big a size in shoe is as bad as if you wear too small a shoe. Buy a shoe that is right size
- If small could cause cramping, foot falling asleep while or after running, blisters, corn or calluses on or between toes, on plantar fascia and deformities
- If big, could cause blisters, corn or calluses form on or between toes, on plantar fascia due to friction and deformities
- Your shoes at the Heel should fit snug, no Foot Slipping
- If you find your present shoes very spacious in width consider buying a narrow pair
- If you find them narrow or snug consider buying a wider pair
- If the outsole of the current shoe has worn out more inwards or outwards, then get your foot alignment checked before getting the right type of shoe(Flat Feet or High Arch)
- Avoid slip-ons wear laced shoes as they would hold your foot well and you can adjust the shoe depending on how you want the shoes to fit your feet
Wearing comfortable shoes that fit well can prevent many foot ailments and is key to your foot health.
