Charcot foot (also called Charcot arthropathy or Charcot neuropathy) is a serious complication of diabetes-related nerve damage (neuropathy) that primarily affects the feet and ankles. It is characterized by the progressive weakening of bones, joints, and soft tissues in the foot. Because nerve damage causes a loss of sensation, minor injuries or stress fractures go unnoticed and untreated. The patient continues to walk on the injured foot, worsening the damage until the joints collapse and the foot's shape changes permanently. If left untreated, Charcot foot can lead to severe deformities, chronic ulcers, infection, and in extreme cases, amputation or life-threatening complications.
Key Symptoms and Causes:--The condition begins with inflammation, swelling, and increased temperature in the foot before structural damage is visible.
