ADHD is a common neuro developmental disorder which is often diagnosed in childhood, and associated with persistent  symptoms like inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.  It is one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in children.  DSM 5 refers to it as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, while ICD 10 criteria fall under the category of Hyperkinetic disorders. ADHD is associated with three primary deficits, though the manifestation and range of symptoms can vary from person to person.

 Some or all the symptoms might be present, and can be primarily:

*  Inattentive

 *  Hyperactive/impulsive(referred earlier for treatment, and diagnosis remains more stable)

*  Both  these symptoms should have been present for a duration of 6 months and usually interfere with regular functioning or development.  Many parents first observe excessive motor activity when the child is a toddler, but symptoms are difficult to distinguish from highly variable normative behaviors before age 4years. ADHD is most often identified during elementary school years, and inattention become smore prominent and impairing. In preschool, the main manifestation is hyperactivity. Inattention becomes more prominent during elementary school. The disorder is relatively stable through early adolescence, but some individuals have a worsened course with development of antisocial behaviors. In most individuals with ADHD, symptoms of motor hyperactivity become less obvious in adolescence and adulthood, but difficulties with restlessness, inattention, a sense of jitteriness, poor planning, and impulsivity persist. v A substantial proportion of children with ADHD remain relatively impaired into adulthood. In adulthood, along with inattention and restlessness, impulsivity, aggression, organization and planning may remain problematic even when hyperactivity has diminished.  ADHD during adulthood may be associated with a wide range of psychological disturbances and disorders.
