PCOS is one of the most common conditions I see in my clinic in Gurgaon — and also one of the most misunderstood. Here are five things I wish every woman with PCOS already knew before walking through my door.

1. PCOS is not just an ovary problem:

Despite the name, PCOS is primarily a hormonal and metabolic condition. Insulin resistance plays a central role in most cases — meaning your cells stop responding to insulin properly, which then disrupts your hormones and triggers the symptoms you see: irregular periods, acne, hair fall, weight gain. Treating only the ovaries misses the bigger picture entirely.

2. You can absolutely get pregnant with PCOS:

This is the myth that breaks my heart the most. PCOS is a leading cause of irregular ovulation — but irregular does not mean absent, and absent does not mean permanent. With the right treatment plan, the majority of women with PCOS conceive successfully. Please do not give up before you have even spoken to a doctor.

3. The pill is not the only answer:

Many women are handed a contraceptive pill at diagnosis and sent home. The pill manages symptoms — it does not treat the underlying condition. If you want to actually address your PCOS, the conversation needs to include diet, insulin sensitivity, lifestyle, and a plan tailored to whether you want to conceive or not.

4. Your mental health is part of the diagnosis:

Women with PCOS have significantly higher rates of anxiety and depression than the general population — this is not a coincidence. The hormonal imbalance, the body image struggles, the fertility uncertainty — all of it takes a toll. If your doctor is not asking about your mental wellbeing, bring it up yourself. It matters as much as your ultrasound report.

5. Small lifestyle changes work but they take time:

Even a 5% reduction in body weight can restore ovulation in many women with PCOS. But this does not happen in two weeks. Sustainable, gradual changes to diet and movement — not crash diets, not extreme exercise — make the biggest difference over time. Be patient with your body. It is not failing you. It just needs the right support.
