Deciding to undergoing a spine surgery was one of the difficult decision you made. You procrastinated, delayed, avoided but finally had to undergo when there was just no other option. Today, spine surgeries are frequently done by minimal invasive techniques and lead to far lesser morbidity than it did earlier. Here are 5 easy steps for a speedy recovery after spine surgery:

1. START WALKING:

Take those first steps soon!

Although it is scary to think of walking immediately after surgery, is is of paramount importance that you walk soon after the procedure. Usually within 6 hours after surgery is done, effect of anesthesia wears off and you must then attempt sit up at the bed side. Once the initial wave of dizziness passes, get ready to stand with support and attempt to walk at least a few steps with support. Once you are more confident, you can stroll in the room. If it is a major surgery and you cannot walk, you must at least move your foot up and down frequently to avoid clotting of blood in your veins. Walking will also help your bowel movement. It should be OK to walk about 20 minutes daily post surgery and then gradually increase as per one's capacity.

2. EASY TO DIGEST FOOD:

Easy to digest food will help bowel movement after surgery.

Anesthesia can also lead to slowing of bowel movement and cause 'paralytic ileus'. It leads to constipation and later loss of appetite and pain in abdomen. It is essential to drink plenty of water, eat food rich in fibres, and continue walking to avoid severe constipation.

3. ITS A SUNDAY:

Relax!!!

Most patients are not clear how much they should walk, sleep or when to resume work. Some lay in bed entire day while others overexert themselves and feel miserable. Every surgery takes it toll on the body. After going home, behave as if its a Sunday. So get up late, have breakfast at leisure, move about the house, sleep for 1-2 hours in afternoon, meet people in evening, have dinner and sleep early. Avoid lifting weights, bending forward and prolonged journey.

4. START STRETCHING:

Stretching will relax the muscles, avoid muscle spasm and may help reduce the post operative pain

It is imperative to remember that we have 33 vertebrae. You may have been operated upon 2-3 of them. If you don't take good care of your spine, eventually others will wear out and lead to resurgery at same level or different level. So start Yoga and other exercises to keep body supple and ligaments and muscles well toned. Change your pattern of work. No continuous sitting or overexertion either. Balance is the key. It all may help avoid further damage to your spine.

5. HAPPY TIME:

Post operative period is the holiday you deserve. Use this time to indulge in activities you love to keep you mind in the right frame and positive atmosphere. Nothing helps healing more than the will to heal... Watch movies, go to garden, spend time with family and keep mind happy!
