Piles or haemorrhoids are a collection of inflamed tissue in and around the anus (the opening through which stools are passed). 

They can be internal (they develop inside the anal canal) or external (they develop outside the edge of the anus). Piles can result in itching, irritation, pain and in some cases bleeding in the anal region.
