What does one mean by perception? Perception means the way in which something is regarded, understood or interpreted. It is a belief or opinion, often held by many people on how things seem. In simple words, perception refers to our sensory experience of the world.
Perception of each and every individual is affected by various factors like their genetic inheritance, environmental influences and obviously one’s own thought processes and personal experiences.
As we grow older many a times the way we see the world becomes fixed. For example, if a person gets angry in every situation we call him to be a volcano – one that could burst any time; or if another person looks at the bad side of everything we tend to put her into brooding category.
We tend to put people into boxes, knowingly or unknowingly. This helps us to predict their reaction towards a certain given circumstance. For instance, if someone gets hurt easily and cries, this person would react to all kinds of hurt; be it the breaking of their favorite thing, their heart break or being rejected by someone; disappointment in job or career or even being rebuked by others etc. and in all these conditions their only reaction would be to cry. Therefore we see in this example that immaterial of the given situation, a person reacts to it according to her/his sensitivity only. And this becomes the basic core of the person; which is very important for a homoeopath to know – for the purpose of individualization.
So up until now everything is normal, right?
Then where does the problem arise?
This behavior becomes a problem when one is not able to accept or at the least see through the ideas of others. They become so fixed with the ideas they have that they no longer believe others are also capable enough to help them. They become obstinate and hence limit their own horizon or their capability of thinking. They never think of broadening their vision or even checking out whether what the other person is saying is logical or not.
It is important to get out of those imaginary boxes that we create around ourselves and thereby limiting ourselves. Getting out of them gives us a sort of freedom and it doesn’t compel us to remain within them forever. It helps us to see the world with different other perspectives.
This is very much similar to the case wherein you wear pink glasses and later the world begins to appear pink. It is not until and unless you remove those glasses you are able to appreciate other colors that the nature has to offer.
So now let us discuss the role of homoeopathy in altering your perception. As everyone knows very well that homoeopathy removes the disease from its root itself; the medicines work not only on the superficial level, which is just the symptoms. It works on a much deeper level. Yes, treating symptoms is definitely important for every homoeopath; but if we treat the basic disturbance (in most of the cases the disturbance is at mental, psychological or emotional level), the main cause of the appearance of symptom; it will automatically treat the symptom as well as the disease.
Treating the disease is the goal of the homoeopathic doctor, but it is not the “only” goal; to treat the “individual person” having the disease is the “actual goal”.
During the process of case taking one becomes automatically aware that they have become “fixed and rigid” with their own thoughts and perception and that they have limited their skyline.
Since the medicines act at the level of mind it has the potential to alter the perception of people. It does pull one out of the imaginary boxes that one has put him into. To believe this one needs to experience this.
To understand it in a simpler manner, let us take an example. Let us comprehend this thought through sulphuric acid (acid commonly used for cleansing purposes at home). Everyone knows that sulphuric acid is a very strong acid and that it can produce burns very easily. But if we dilute the acid its burn-producing capacity decreases.
Accordingly the homoeopathic medicines act in a somewhat similar fashion. It helps you dilute your strong, rigid perception that you are holding onto. And opens up your minds to accept others notions.
