Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting women of reproductive age in India. It typically presents as irregular periods, raised male hormone (androgen) levels, ovarian cysts, weight gain and excessive facial hair growth (hirsutism). Many women with PCOS suffer infertility. The urban women are more affected due to sedentary lifestyle.
The exact cause of PCOS is not known but around 70% of the women are found to have insulin resistance. Genetic and hormonal factors also play a major role.
Can PCOS Be Managed Naturally?
While depending on the course of treatment, the doctor may start hormonal medications like birth control pills or Metformin, lifestyle modification plays a huge role in reducing the symptoms and sometimes reversing the condition as well. This includes:
- Healthy and Balanced Diet: A low carbohydrate diet reduces post meal sugar spikes and insulin levels which are normally elevated in PCOS. Include whole grains, vegetables, adequate protein and healthy fats in every meal. Avoid processed foods and food items with high glycaemic value like sweets or sugary drinks.
- Regular Physical Activity: It is recommended to do at least 150 min of moderate intensity aerobic activities like walking, jogging or swimming. Apart from this moderate to high intensity muscle strengthening exercises should be done at least 2-3 days per week.
- Weight Reduction: A reduction of 5-10% of body weight can improve the hormonal balance, regularize the menstruation and increase the chances of ovulation.
- Stress management: Chronic stress can lead to persistently high cortisol levels which can cause insulin resistance and increase in androgen hormones. Yoga, meditation and deep breathing exercises help in stress reduction. Practicing them on a regular basis can improve PCOS symptoms.
- Good Quality Sleep: An uninterrupted sleep for 7-9 hours reduces stress hormone levels and rejuvenates the body. Follow a sleep routine like limiting screen use, dim lights, cozy bedroom, warm shower before bed or reading a book.
- Natural Supplements: Food rich in natural supplements like Vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids, Zinc and Magnesium play a major role in attaining hormonal balance and insulin sensitivity.
Conclusion:
PCOS can be managed effectively through medication and lifestyle modifications. Though the role of medications is important, the effect of a healthy lifestyle cannot be overlooked. A balanced diet, regular exercise, good quality sleep and stress management can significantly reduce the symptoms and sometimes reverse the condition.
