Watch the video to gain more insight into the options available for treating painful sex.

In her previous video Dr. Sarita Naik introduced the topic ‘painful intercourse’ in which she explained the symptoms and the most common causes for painful intercourse. Continuing on the topic, here is another video by Dr. Naik on what are the options available for treating painful sex where she speaks in detail about:

  • Role of a gynecologist in treating painful sex
  • Importance of physical examination and laboratory tests
  • Recommended medications
  • Pelvic floor physiotherapy for correction of vaginismus
  • Dilator therapy in vaginismus patients
  • Role of a psychotherapist in treating painful sex

To treat painful intercourse it is very essential to first diagnose the underlying cause. Dr. Naik says one of the first responsibilities of a gynecologist is to check for any vaginal or cervical infections and treat the infections if any with vaginal suppositories and antibiotics. In case of any suspicious rashes or tissue growths around vagina/cervix a PAP smear may also be advocated.

In cases of pelvic inflammatory diseases the gynecologist may prescribe appropriate medications or if the gynecologist suspects any structural anomalies such as uterine fibroids or ovarian cysts, they might perform an ultrasound to confirm their suspicion and initiate appropriate treatment.

Other causes such as vaginismus or psychological causes may require an interdisciplinary approach to treat the condition.
