Painful intercourse or dyspareunia is a medical condition characterized by persistent or recurrent genital pain during or after sexual intercourse. Many women experience painful sex at some point in their lives.
You might be experiencing painful intercourse, when you feel any or all the following symptoms just before, during, or after sex:
- Pain during penetration
- Pain during every penetration (including insertion of a tampon)
- Deep or severe pain during thrusting
- Burning sensation
- Throbbing pain even after several hours after intercourse
Painful intercourse might occur due to multiple reasons, both structural and psychological.
