Case report:
A 38 year old female reported to the clinic with this growth and severe bleeding (on provocation). On examining,a solitary overgrowth and poor oral hygiene was evaluated. On taking history, she reported that this was her second pregnancy and in the previous pregnancy similar but larger overgrowth was present, which was left untreated and it subsided(complete or incomplete?).The previous pregnancy ended up at stillbirth at term.
So now she was on anticoagulant as well along with other essential medications given during pregnancy.
Considering the status of oral hygiene and symptoms presented, scaling using xylocaine spray and jelly was performed.Patient was suggested to use chlorhexidine 0.2% as mouthwash and gum massage gel.But patient reported irritation in the throat within 24hrs so she was asked to cease the mouthwash and massage.Follow up after scaling was done in 7days.She responded well, swelling was considerably reduced. Further deep scaling was done to remove the remaining local factors(if any).Patient was asked to maintain oral hygiene with proper brushing and warm saline rinses.
Follow up in 14days, slight recontouring of gingiva was done in anterior papillary region where the gingiva was now fibrotic after scaling so that patient could now brush without obstruction.
No dressing was given to keep the patient from the irritating affect of eugenol dressing.
How do females need to take care of their oral hygiene?
1.Proper brushing in 2mins.Make sure to place the brush at an angle so it massages the gums as you move it two and forth.
2.Use atleast dry brush before sleeping so as to prevent anything from getting rot overnight.
3.Flossing or use of interdental brushes must be done if food gets stuck in between your teeth.
4.No swelling or bleeding or bad breathe is to be ignored. These are symptoms they need attention.
5.Pregnant females must visit the dentist as frequently as they visit their obstetrician.
