Netra tarpan acts as both preventive and curative therapy for maintaining normal healthy condition of eyes. Netra Tarpan is also called Akshi tarpan where Akshi means eyes and tarpan means nourishing. So accumulatively Netra tarpan means nourishment of eyes. Here in this procedure lukewarm Medicated Ghee is made to stay stagnant in the eyes for a speculated time in a speculated formed frame. Lukewarm Ghee should be poured to the orbit till the level of tip of eyelashes. Patient is asked to open and close the eyes intermittently and steadily.
Here period of retention of Medicated Ghee depends on vitiated Doshas and site of the diseases. The drugs used in tarpan procedure is the combination of Ghee and decoction of medicines hence the drugs can easily cross the corneal epithelium (being lypophilic) and endothelium (being hydrophilic) . Also due to more contact time the active component of the drug used in Tarpana will be absorbed more to cure the diseases. Medicated Ghee enters deeper layers of the eyes and cleanse every minute part. The phospolipid nature of the medication facilitates entry of the drug into the eyeball through corneal surface. Since the corneal epithelium is permeable to lipid soluble substances and lipid soluble substances passes the corneal epithelium irrespective of the molecular size. Netra Tarpan is highly effective because tissue contact time and bioavailability is more and hence the therapeutic concentration is achieved.
