Since 1982, every first week of September (1st Sep - 7th Sep) the Government of India has been organizing a nationwide program called the ‘National Nutrition Week (NNW)’ to increase public awareness about nutrition and healthy eating habits among the Indian public.
Good Food and Nutrition - Foundations of a Healthy Nation
Eradication of the deep rooted and rampant malnutrition and undernutrition issue particularly in the children was the primary driving force behind initiation of the NNW program. The Government of India (GOI) has been tackling the issue with a proactive and mission-driven approach by ‘reaching out to the public’ with various aspects of nutrition. GOI has been instrumental in improving nutritional awareness in public by staging street activities, conducting competitions, awareness campaigns, and practical instructions. Every year a specific theme is launched for the NNW such as eat right, bite by bite, feeding smart right from the start, etc.
Ensuring Proper Nutrition is Everybody’s Responsibility
Due to persistent efforts from the government and health bodies, notable improvement has been achieved in the general nutritional status, but eradication is still a long way ahead. While the government and the health bodies are doing their part, now is the time we all do our part by watching what we eat and ensuring the right nutrition for our families and dear ones.
This 'National Nutrition Week' let us all pledge to contribute to building a healthy nation by following a few simple steps:
- Choosing the right carbs and the good carbs; and not avoiding the carbs completely: Include whole grains in your diet. Avoid sugars, refined grains, and processed foods
- Pack your meals with proteins - Include sources rich in protein in your diet, such as fish, poultry, nuts, and beans
- Choose your fats wisely: Include healthy fats in your diet. Limit foods high in saturated fat. Avoid foods with trans fat
- Go for the greens: Have a fiber-filled diet with fresh vegetables and fruits
- Get your required daily doses of vitamins and minerals
- Keep hydrated
- Avoid unhealthy habits such as binge eating, alcohol consumption, and smoking
- Consult your dietician and nutrition expert before starting any diet
- Be physically active, practice yoga and meditation, and exercise regularly
The Closing Note: It is hard to break the old habits and form new ones, particularly when it comes to food. But it is never too late, every small step you take towards ‘eating right’ is a right step you take towards being the best version of yourself.
