National Cancer Awareness Day, celebrated on November 7 in India, serves as a reminder of the crucial importance of cancer prevention and early detection for everyone. This significant day coincides with the birth anniversary of the Nobel Prize-winning scientist, Madame Curie, a pioneer in the fight against cancer. Her groundbreaking research led to the development of nuclear energy and radiotherapy for cancer treatment.

The National Cancer Control Programme, which was established in 1975, aimed to provide accessible cancer treatment facilities throughout India. Since then, it has played a pivotal role in improving cancer care and management.

In 2022, a study revealed that an estimated 1,461,427 new cancer cases occurred in India, with a crude rate of 100.4 per 100,000 people. Shockingly, statistics indicate that one in every nine individuals in India is at risk of developing cancer during their lifetime. Among the most common cancers, lung cancer topped the list for males, while breast cancer was the leading cancer in females. For children aged 0-14 years, lymphoid leukemia was the most prevalent form of cancer, affecting 29.2% of boys and 24.2% of girls. Furthermore, it is projected that the number of cancer cases in India will increase by 12.8% in 2025 compared to 2020 (1).

National Cancer Awareness Day was officially declared by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, in September 2014. It was decided that November 7 would be marked as National Cancer Awareness Day each year to promote awareness of early cancer detection and discourage lifestyles that contribute to cancer risk. Dr. Harsh Vardhan took the initiative to launch state-level cancer control programs, with an emphasis on early detection and cancer research.

To effectively observe National Cancer Awareness Day, individuals can take several proactive steps:

  1. Get Screened: Regular cancer screenings are vital, as they can lead to the early detection of cancer, increasing the chances of successful treatment.
  2. Spread Awareness: Inform your friends and family about the significance of early cancer detection. Encourage them to undergo regular check-ups and screenings.
  3. Lifestyle Choices: Make informed choices to reduce the risk of cancer. Avoid habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, maintain a healthy diet, and engage in regular physical activity.

National Cancer Awareness Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against cancer and the importance of early detection in improving survival rates. By taking these simple steps, we can all contribute to raising awareness and reducing the burden of cancer in our society. Remember, knowledge and early action can be lifesaving when it comes to cancer.
