Myth: Shaving increases hair growth.
Fact: Shaving does not have any effect on hair growth.
Most people do believe that shaving your body hair will cause it to grow at a faster rate. Despite this common misconception, shaving does not make your hair grow faster or thicker. The root of each hair is attached to a hair follicle that is located beneath the topmost layer of our skin.
When we shave, we shave the hair only from the surface of the skin and not from the root. Therefore, shaving cannot be attributed to hair growth or thickness of hair.
The reason why people think that shaving increases hair growth could be due to many reasons such as hair regrowth after shaving has a different appearance compared to natural hair.
The new hair appears more coarse and dense Sometimes, the hair can even appear darker as it is not yet been exposed to sun, soap, chemicals etc
However, shaving of unwanted body can sometimes lead to
- Body cuts and scratches
- Skin irritation
- Itchy skin
- Razor burn
Take home message: Don’t let misbeliefs get the better of you, shaving does not cause an increase in hair growth. Having said that, always follow a recommended protocol while shaving delicate body parts as it can sometimes lead to body cuts and infection if cleanliness is not followed.
