Fact - Not all vaccines are harmful during pregnancy. There are certain vaccines which are safe and are recommended for women before, during and after pregnancy. Vaccinations keep the expecting mothers and their babies healthy. The antibodies generated in a mother’s body as a response to the vaccines protect the mother from getting a serious disease and then passing it to her newborn. However, There are a few live vaccines that are not recommended during pregnancy.
The specific vaccines that you may require during pregnancy are determined by your doctor based on your age, medical conditions, lifestyle, previous vaccinations and travel plans.
- Vaccines such as flu vaccine and DTaP vaccine are recommended during pregnancy.
- Live vaccines such as MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV or nasal flu vaccine), HPV vaccine, varicella (chicken pox) vaccine are not recommended during pregnancy. If you are planning to get pregnant your doctor might suggest you to take these vaccines a month or more before pregnancy.
