Can a Diabetic patient have Mango?
The answer is 'YES'. A diabetic patient can even have mango daily when consumed in moderation.
Benefits of Mango -
Mango is known as the 'King of Fruits' . During the season while everyone enjoys mangoes, diabetics have to think twice. In a recent study, mangoes were identified as safe fruits for a diabetic diet. Though mangoes contain high sugar and carb content, but it is rich in vitamins (A,C,K,E,B complex, excluding Vit B12), this is responsible for antioxidant properties, they are also high in fibres and contain potassium, calcium, copper, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids and Low Fats. Mangoes also contain a substance called Mangiferin which has anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. They also help in lowering blood sugar and strengthen blood vessels.The high fibre content restricts the absorption of sugars.
How much amount can be called as 'Moderate'?
If mangoes are consumed in a disciplined way, they won't be of any harm rather they will prove to be helpful in diabetes.
1. Get your blood sugar levels monitored and controlled.
2. DONOT have mangoes just after meals, have them in between the meals.
3. If you eat up to 100 grams of mango daily ,there will be no spike in your blood glucose level, or you can go for half an average size mango a day.
4. If you are consuming mango, avoid consuming other carbohydrate rich food.
Always keep a Glucometer handy to check your blood glucose at home.
Avoid juicing mangoes ,this might cause loss of fibre content.
Eating mango in the fruit form is healthier.
Avoid eating over-ripe mangoes as they have denser sugar content.
