Lower back painwill occur in 75 percent of people at some point in their lives. Lower backpain can be grouped into four types depending on the main site of pain andpositions of exacerbation.

Type 1 is Mechanicallower back pain that is worse with bending forward (flexion). These patientstypically have worn-out discs as the source of their pain, so it hurts when youbend to lift things.

Type 2 ismechanical lower back pain that is worse with bending backward (extension).These patients typically have osteoarthritis of their facet joint and are morecomfortable with slouching forward.

Type 3 is Leg paindominant which is constant and worse with flexion. In this case, you will havesciatica pain which comes from a disc herniation pushing on a nerve root.

Type 4 is Leg paindominant which is intermittent and relieved by flexion. These are the classicalneurogenic claudication patients. You will feel comfortable at rest but becauseyou have spinal stenosis, when you stand up and walk you get leg pain whichimproves if you push a shopping cart or do a similar activity.

Lower back pain canbe more severe if it is associated with bladder & bowel movementdysfunction in that case immediately consult a health professional.
