• You can start by searching on Google by typing “Doctors near me”. You can also search by specialty such as “Heart Specialist” or “Physician near me”. If you are not sure about specialty, try finding doctors who can treat your disease or symptoms such as “Doctors treating Migraine”.
  • Once you have identified the names of few doctors in your vicinity, check their ratings on Google. That should usually be more than 4. Also see how many people have rated them. Higher the number, more authentic the rating. Also read some of the reviews given by his patients. More positive reviews, better the doctors.
  • Pick a clinic near by. It will save commuting time in an emergency situation.
  • Know about the doctor’s qualification - MBBS, MD / MS, DM etc. are recognized degrees in allopathy. Someone with just fellowships in front of their name with no recognized degree is red flag signs. You have every right to ask for the qualification of doctor and even shown certificates when asked. Few quacks may just put degrees on boards but refuse to show certificates.
  • Apart from qualifications, the clinical experience of the doctor must also be taken into consideration. As a thumb rule, more the experience, better for you.
  • Call the Doctor & try to speak to him. The way he speaks to you can give you some idea about his professionalism & humility.  This is also a good time to seek an appointment & check his availability. Don’t forget to ask for his consultation fees & any specific facility ( like wheel chair facility) if you need.
  • A Doctor who sees 100 patients a day is a red flag sign. A good doctor would spend enough time listening and explaining to you about your condition.
  • A Good doctor advises you and allows you to make your choices but not impose treatment upon you. A good doctor will give you a balanced advice and explain both the pros and cons of a treatment or surgery and give you freedom to make decision. Someone who uses fear tactics and forces you to choose a treatment is a red flag sign.
  • A good doctor will encourage you to take second opinion of another doctor when you are in doubt.
  • Talk to friends, relatives and previous patients about their experience with the doctor and do not blindly believe the reviews online.
