Understanding Your Pregnancy Scans – A Simple Guide for Expecting Mothers
Pregnancy is a journey where joy and uncertainty walk hand in hand where excitement and anticipation are often accompanied by moments of anxiety and concern for the baby's well-being. The most common question asked by any pregnant women is “How many ultrasounds will I need?” Today we will answer your every possible doubt related to ultrasound in pregnancy.
First of all, ultrasound scans are safe, non-invasive, and help make sure both you and your baby are doing well. They do not have any harmful radiation for mother or baby. Never ignore the scheduled date for your ultrasound scan — each one is timed carefully to check specific aspects of your baby’s development. Delaying or missing a scan can reduce its diagnostic value and may cause important findings to be missed
✅ Routine Ultrasounds in a Normal Pregnancy
Most women will have at least 3–5 ultrasound scans during pregnancy. These are planned at different stages to check on the baby’s health and development. These days RCH ID is required before any ultrasound for a pregnant women which is provided by the doctor or hospital. Dont forget to take your RCH ID along with you before any Ultrasound.
1. Early Pregnancy Scan (6–9 weeks)Also called the dating scan,
Confirms the pregnancy
Checks if the baby is in the right place (inside the uterus)
Detects the baby’s heartbeat
This scan gives the absolute confirmation of pregnancy as urine pregnancy test or blood BHCG can come positive many times but a live pregnancy may not be there inside the uterus.
2. NT Scan or First Trimester Scan (11–13+6 weeks)
This is part of the first-trimester screening. It:Measures the presence of nasal bone and fluid behind the baby’s neck (nuchal translucency) Checks for early signs of Genetic problems (like Down syndrome)
Often done along with a blood test (double marker) and both are checked in combination to find out the risk of having a genetically abnormal child.
3. Anomaly Scan (18–22 weeks)Also called the level 2 scan
This is a detailed scan to check and usually takes 45 mins to 1 hour
Baby’s every organ including spine, limbs, brain, heart, kidney,liver,gut
Placenta position
Amniotic fluid & Cervical length
No women should ever miss it as it detects any structural defect in baby.
4. Growth Scan (28–32 weeks)
This ultrasound helps:Monitor baby’s growth and weight
Check the amount of amniotic fluid
Assess placental health
Doppler study (blood flow in baby)Ensures the baby is growing well and getting enough oxygen/nutrients.
5. Term/Position Scan (36–38 weeks)
This final scan checks:Baby’s position (head down or breech)
Estimated birth weight
Amniotic fluid levels
Any last-minute concerns before delivery & Helps the doctor plan for a safe delivery.
