"Honeymoon cystitis" is a traditional term for a urinary tract infection (UTI) that occurs shortly after sexual activity. While it is common in newly married couples, it can affect any person assigned female at birth after their first sexual encounter or after a long period of abstinence. 

Causes & Why It Happens:

- Bacterial Introduction: The primary cause is bacteria (most commonly E. coli) being pushed into the urethra—the tube that carries urine out of the body—during sexual intercourse.

- Anatomical Factors: Because the female urethra is short and close to the anus, bacteria can easily reach and infect the bladder.

- Contributing Factors: Inadequate lubrication, frequent or prolonged intercourse, and certain contraceptives like spermicides or diaphragms can increase risk.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms typically appear within 24–48 hours of sexual activity and include:A strong, persistent urge to urinate.A burning sensation or pain during urination.Passing small amounts of cloudy or strong-smelling urine.Pelvic discomfort or pressure in the lower abdomen.Traces of blood in the urine (hematuria).

How to Prevent It

-Urinate Before and After Sex: Emptying your bladder immediately after intercourse helps flush out bacteria that may have entered the urethra.

-Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day ensures frequent urination, which naturally cleanses the urinary tract.

-Maintain Hygiene: Clean the genital area before and after sex and always wipe from front to back to prevent spreading bacteria.

-Use Lubrication: Reducing friction during sex can prevent local irritation that makes infection more likely. 

Treatment

Antibiotics: This is the most common and effective treatment. A doctor will typically prescribe a short course (3–7 days) to clear the infection.Pain Relief: Over-the-counter medications and heating pads on the lower abdomen can help soothe bladder pressure.

Recurrent Cases: For those who experience frequent infections, a doctor may suggest a single dose of an antibiotic to take specifically after sex.
