High-Intensity Laser is a device that produceslights of one or more specific wavelengths. A laser beam transmits energy thatspread through the tissue and can be used to treat inflamed, torn, damaged, orinfected tissue. A high-intensity laser can speed up healing, recovery andreduce pain.

High-intensity laser non-invasively penetratesthe skin and spreads further into the muscle, tendon, subcutaneous fat, andbone tissue. Depending on the location of the treated area, the process throughwhich laser heals the damaged tissue is called photo biostimulation.

Upon application of laser therapy on humantissue there are four different effects that occur: Reflection- the lightdoesn’t penetrate the tissue. Scattering- the light is dispersed randomly inthe tissue. Absorption- the light is absorbed by the tissue. And Transmission-the light is transferred deeper into the tissue structures being absorbedeventually.

There are three key effects of therapeutichigh-intensity laser Photo-acoustic (photo-acoustic waves are created when thearea is irradiated by using very short pulses with a high repetition rate),biostimulation (it means stimulating the organism on the cellular level), andthermic.

The high-intensity laser produces aphoto-acoustic effect to stimulate the free nerve ending in the tissue andcause nearly rapid pain relief in the area.

The high-intensity laser producesBio-stimulation to enhance healing and recovery. High-intensity laser therapycan cause a faster exchange of oxygen and metabolites to mitochondria andmitochondria further stimulate to synthesize ATP, ATP allows for the fastersynthesis of RNA and DNA and leads to quicker recovery, healing, and edemareduction in the treated area.

The thermic effect of high-intensity lasertherapy is caused by the absorption of the laser beam in the superficialstructures which consequently causes a temperature increase in the tissue. Thethermic effect also causes vasodilation as a consequence blood profusionincreases, larger amounts of oxygen are delivered to the tissue and moremetabolites are resorbed.
