An outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) has recently been reported in various areas of Maharashtra, including Pune and other places.
GBS is an acute, immune-mediated polyneuropathy and one of the most common causes of acute, acquired weakness.
It is often triggered by a preceding infection.Antecedent infections such as gastrointestinal issues (e.g., diarrhea) and upper respiratory infections are commonly linked to GBS. Common organisms associated with these infections include Campylobacter and the influenza virus.
GBS causes muscle weakness on both sides of the body, which can worsen overtime. The weakness typically starts in the legs and then spreads to the arms.In preschool children, GBS may present as refusal to walk and leg pain. Some children may experience facial involvement or autonomic disturbances such as hypotension, hypertension, or heart rate variability. In severe cases, the muscles used for breathing may become very weak, and the child may require ventilator support
Children primarily require hospitalization and are treated with immunomodulatory medications along with symptomatic management.
About 90% of children recover within 2-4 weeks, and recovery is generally complete in children compared to adults. However, some children may take a few months to fully recover.
Prevention can be achieved by addressing infections promptly and appropriately, which may reduce the risk of triggering GBS. Practicing good hygiene (such as frequent handwashing and avoiding contact with infected individuals) can also help reduce the risk of infections linked to GBS.
