Accidental or suicidal ingesting of acid or alkali like phenyl, floor cleaner, hydrochloric acid can lead to burns in food pipe and stomach. It can lead to acute swallowing problem or chronic problems like difficulty in swallowing, vomiting food or blood. Early treatment is Endoscopic assessment of the injury one week after injury. Any surgical treatment requires 6 months to one year waiting period for the injury to manifest completely. Treatment of cicatrised food pipe is replacement of esophagus with stomach or colon. It involves laparoscopic transhiatal, removal of the diseased esophagus and replacement with stomach tube with anastomosis in the neck, provided stomach is not involved in the injury. If stomach is involved, colon transposition is required. Both surgeries are possible and are done with good results.
