What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction and problems with arousal are common concerns in men.

Occasional problems with erection are common due to stress and other emotional issues. However, if the problem persists or occurs frequently, it may indicate an underlying health condition.

Long-lasting problems with erection can affect your self-confidence and strain relationships. Here let’s take a look at the common causes of ED.

What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction has several possible causes that include both physical and emotional factors. ED occurs when the erection process is disrupted.

An erection occurs as the result of increased blood flow to your penis. This happens due to various factors - sexual thoughts or direct contact with the penis. Any disruption to the blood flow to your penis can cause problems with erection.

Common causes of erectile dysfunction include the following:

  • Cardiovascular diseases

  • Hypertension

  • High cholesterol

  • Diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Parkinson's disease

  • Peyronie disease (an anatomical disorder of the penis)

  • Surgical complications

  • Injuries in the spinal cord or penile area

  • Smoking

  • Substance use or alcoholism

  • Prostate disease

Erectile dysfunction can also occur due to emotional problems such as stress, anxiety, depression or fear of intimacy.

What are the symptoms of erectile dysfunction?

The main symptoms of erectile dysfunction include difficulty in getting an erection, difficulty keeping an erection and reduced sexual desire.

Prolonged erection is also one of the symptoms of ED which usually occurs without sexual arousal.

It is important that you recognise the symptoms of ED and seek medical attention if the problem persists. Your doctor may recommend certain diagnostic tests such as blood and urine exams to confirm the diagnosis and plan your treatment.

How is erectile dysfunction treated?

1. Lifestyle modifications. Certain lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, a healthy diet and quitting habits such as smoking and substance use can help improve your overall health and manage problems with erection.

2. Medications. Certain oral medications are effective in treating erectile dysfunction. These medications help increase the blood flow and help in getting an erection in response to sexual stimulation.

3. Intracavernosal therapies. It includes injection therapies, often used when oral therapies don't work.

4. Penile pumps. These are hand or battery-powered pumps that help in attaining an erection. It creates a vacuum that pulls blood into your penis.

5. Penile implants. Here malleable or inflatable devices are surgically implanted on the sides of the penis. This method is chosen only when other treatment methods have proven to be ineffective.

It is important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a common condition that is treatable. Your doctor will help in identifying the cause of the condition and will plan the treatment accordingly.
